Every relationship has disagreements and arguments sometimes. This is normal. How you choose to deal with your disagreements is what really counts. Both people should work hard to communicate effectively, and treat each other with respect to work out differences.
Relationships with others are critical to our well being as humans; we were made to be social, have friends and connect. Whether these friendships are romantic or platonic, are with our family, school, clubs, teams or community, having healthy relationships in these areas is vital to our well being.
When we experience relationships in any of these areas that are not healthy for us, or that use power and control over us, we can begin to have trouble. In some cases unhealthy relationships begin to erode our self esteem, our ability to concentrate, may keep us from fully developing our skills, areas that we like or fulfilling our passion and purpose. 'This perspective can be very difficult when we fall in love with another person. Our feelings are strong and each of us wants to be loved by another person. It is easy and normal to minimize red flags and warnings because we want so strongly to feel connected to another person.
Knowing the signs of both healthy and unhealthy relationships reinforces the type of healthy partners we can look for when establishing relationships of any kind. Abusive relationships use tactics of fear, force and manipulation to have power and control of one party over another.
Unfortunately you or your teen may be experiencing abusive signs and painful outcomes. Attend this very important and interactive workshop to learn more and engage in meaningful discussions with other teens and parents on this topic.
